Physical Education

Physical Education is important for every child throughout the school, from Kindergarten to Years 12 and 13. In the Kindergarten (Foundation Stage) (ages 2 – 5) the Early Learning Goal of ‘Physical Development’ concentrates on the fine and gross motor coordination skills through the use of equipment and materials such as pencils, scissors, brushes, glue, paint, sand, water, playdough and clay, balancing and climbing apparatus, and movement and musical activities.

In Key Stage 1 (ages 5 – 7), students are taught basic skills such as catching, throwing and kicking. These and other skills are developed throughout the Primary School so that all students can participate to the best of their ability in the School’s sporting programme.

From Key Stage 2 of the Primary School to Key Stage 4 of the Secondary School (ages 7 – 18), Physical Education remains compulsory and includes a variety of activities such as gymnastics, movement and dance, athletics, football, netball, rugby, rounders, hockey and cricket, aiming to give a balance of experience.

In Key Stage 4 in Years 10 – 11, students may choose to take Physical Educationas an IGCSE subject. A summary of the IGCSE Physical Educationsyllabus, and further information about all subjects offered in Years 10 and 11 are provided in the IGCSE Prospectus, which may be downloaded here. The full syllabus for IGCSE Physical Educationmay be found by visiting the CIE website (http://www.cie.org.uk) and locating the subject via its name and/or subject code.

In Key Stage 5 in Year 12 the subject may be studied at GCE AS Level, and in Year 13 at GCE A Level. A summary of the GCE AS Level and A Level Physical Educationsyllabuses, and further information about all subjects offered in Years 12 and 13 are provided in the AS & A Level Prospectus, which may be downloaded here.
