Greek
In the Reception classes, modern Greek is introduced through activities. Formal modern Greek lessons begin in Year 1 and students are firstly assessed and then join one of three or four groups in accordance with ability. There will be opportunities to change groups at a later stage if this is advisable. The School’s aims in teaching children Greek include increasing linguistic competence, engaging in cultural experiences, and generally promoting positive attitudes towards the Greek language through a range of learning activities. Greek is compulsory for all students from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 5 – 11).
Throughout the Secondary School, Greek remains compulsory for students of Greek Cypriot origin and optional (though encouraged) for others; each year group continues to be split into groups in accordance with ability.
At Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5 in Years 10 – 13, Greek is studied, and the corresponding examination taken, at GCSE level, GCE AS Level, and GCE A Level, according to ability.
