The International Award (DoE)

The Heritage Private School successfully runs groups for Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh International Awards. Pupils taking part enjoy the challenging expeditions/hikes.

The Bronze, Silver and Gold. Awards have a different starting age and period of participation. However, for all three awards there are four Sections:

  • Service: to encourage service to individuals and the community
  • Skills: to encourage the discovery and development of personal interests and social and practical skills
  • Physical Recreation: to encourage participation and improvement in physical activity
  • Expeditions: to encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery

Gold Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award is the last and most demanding of the awards. It can be done once you are 16+. It takes at least a year and also involves a residential trip, which does not take place in the other two awards.

Requirements
  • Service: 12 months
  • Skills and Physical recreation: 1 Section for 12 months and the other Section for 6 months
  • Expedition: Plan prepare and undertake a 4 day, 3 night venture
  • Residential: Undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights

For those who do not have their Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award a furthur 6 months in either the Service or the longer of the Skills / Physical Recreation Section must be done.

Silver award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Silver award is normally taken at 15+. It is also not necessary to have done the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award previously, although more work is required.

Requirements
  • Service: 6 months
  • Skills and Physical Recreation: 3 months in 1 area and 6 months in the other
  • Expedition: Plan prepare and undertake a 3 day, 2 night venture

For those who do not have the Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award, a furthur 6 months must be take in either Service or the longer of the Skills / Physical Recreation Section.

Bronze Award

The Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze Award is the first of the three awards. It can be started when you are over 14 years old. The award takes at least 6 months to complete and so commitment is needed.

Requirements
  • Service: 3 months
  • Skills: 3 months
  • Physical Recreation: 3 months Expedition: Plan prepare and undertake a 2 day, 1 night venture

It is then necessary to undertake a further 3 months in either the Service, Skills or Physical Recreation Section.
